The North Fork Valley, located in Delta & Gunnison Counties, is a landscape and community in transition. Farms and ranches sustained by the North Fork of the Gunnison River dot the landscape, surrounded on all sides by public lands. Historically a coal-mining and agricultural region, the economy of the North Fork has been closely tied to the boom and bust cycles of the coal industry for the last hundred years. We are watching in real-time as our community is changing. However, increasing water scarcity driven by a changing climate, economic impacts from the COVID-19 global pandemic, and federal land management decisions that disregard our local interests are creating an incredible amount of uncertainty for our local communities. Affordability is at an all-time low and people who work in town can no longer live in town. We need a community-based approach to these problems in order for future generations to succeed.

We believe solutions will be achieved for some of the current problems occurring in our communities. Critical lands for irrigation water, recreation, wildlife migration, and other public lands should be protected from harmful activities like oil and gas development in order to make our communities more resilient in the future. Upgrading and enhancing water infrastructure and making improvements to riparian areas can make a significant difference in drought resilience and climate change adaptation. Helping farmers and ranchers institute regenerative practices will create jobs and be better for the climate. Managing the waste methane from active and abandoned mines represents an opportunity to create jobs around remediation and the capture, use, and/or destruction of this methane pollution, a potent greenhouse gas.

We are building a broad coalition to lift our voices together and develop community-driven solutions that embrace sustainable economic opportunities, foster a just transition for our economy, protect the natural environment of the North Fork Valley, and preserve our heritage and way of life. We hope to create a proactive vision which protects everything that makes the North Fork Valley special - the vibrant local economy, agricultural heritage, clean air and water, rural character, and abundant opportunities for sustainable outdoor recreation.

As a community member, farmer, rancher, local business owner, or outdoor recreator, we ask for your support for the Keep the North Fork Fruitful campaign to protect what makes the North Fork Valley such a special place and make sure that our air, lands, and water are conserved so that our economy and way of life may continue for future generations.
